Merida may be a good place to rent a car. The local public bus service is not suitable for tourists. Drivers do not speak English, and no easy way to get directions from the local community they are kind and try to help, but the language may be a barrier. Many car rentals usually can take a deposit in Cash, you pay the rent in advance plus they want to secure the deductible at all times so the deposit will be what covers that(they never say it like that).
